CONTEMPLATING MATURITY
Артур Кальмейер

You hadn’t aged too much
You hadn’t changed too much
At least that’s what they say -
Of course, it’s true that you
Hadn’t lived a whole lot
And it’s the living thing
That ages you, my friend,
And kills you in the end

Yet often times at dusk
When you’re alone at home
Sit listening in the dark
To raindrops’ monotone
You’re wondering - how long
Has been this journey through
The continents and wars
And heartbreaks come and gone

You were supposed to die
Back at the age of three
Packed in a slow train
With destination “East”
Yet you’ve escaped alive,
Didn’t make the target list
When German bombs rained down
And people screamed in pain

Since then, you’ve always felt
You lived on borrowed time
Survivor by mistake
Not sure if quite deserving
The precious gift from God,
Some kind of faithful loan,
Though not requested yet
Due at maturity - one night
When you’re at home
                        alone.
